Paving in a Town That Rebuilt and Grew

Asphalt paving in Woodward serves a town that has changed a lot in twenty years. Woodward was incorporated in August 1883 after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway built a depot there. On November 12, 2005, an F-2 tornado damaged many homes in the southeast and east parts of town. The population dropped to 1,024 in 2010, then rose to 1,346 in 2020, an increase of about 31 percent. That mix of rebuilt homes, new construction and older properties means very different driveway needs on the same street.

New construction

New homes often get a driveway poured or paved soon after the house, sometimes before the backfill around the foundation has finished settling. That leads to dips by the garage. On new driveways we pay attention to compaction near the house and set the base so it does not follow the backfill down.

Older homes

Older driveways in town are often at the age where the base has broken down. Replacement on a new, compacted base is usually the better buy than more patches.

Location

Woodward sits at 1,060 feet and hosts the Woodward-Granger middle and high schools. It is close enough to Ames, Madrid and the northern Des Moines suburbs that many residents commute.

What we do here

  • New driveways and replacements
  • Overlays on sound surfaces
  • Patching, crack filling and sealcoating
  • Lots for churches, schools and businesses

Every job starts with a site visit and a written quote. If the work touches the street or a county road, we check the local requirements before scheduling.

Schools and commuters

Woodward hosts the Woodward-Granger middle and high schools, with the elementary in Granger. School and church lots get heavy use at specific times, and we schedule around them. Many residents commute, so for driveways we plan work days in advance and let you know when the cars must be out.

Storm repairs

If a driveway was damaged during storm cleanup, the damage is often at the street end where heavy trucks turned. Saw-cut patches there can save the rest of the driveway.

Woodward Questions

Why is there a dip in my new driveway by the garage?

Usually the backfill around the foundation settled after the driveway went in. We cut out the low area, compact and rebuild the base and patch it to grade.

Is Woodward in your service area?

Yes. We work in Woodward along with Madrid, Ogden and Boone.

Should I replace or keep patching my older driveway?

If patches keep failing or the surface moves under a car, replace it. If the base is firm, repairs and a sealcoat make sense.

Can you patch only the damaged part of my driveway?

Often. If the rest of the driveway is sound, we cut out and rebuild the damaged area and blend it in.
