How Asphalt Paving Ames Works
Asphalt Paving Ames builds and maintains asphalt driveways, overlays and parking lots in Ames and the towns around it in Story and Boone counties. The work runs from new driveways and full replacements to sealcoating, patching, crack repair and parking lot striping.
Central Iowa pavement has a short season and a hard winter. Ames averages 28.3 inches of snow a year, its January nights average below 10 degrees, and the typical frost-free stretch at the airport runs only from early May to early October. Much of the ground in this part of the state is glacial till, and the low, flat spots often stay wet into spring. That combination is what breaks asphalt: water gets under it, freezes and lifts it. So each job starts with the ground and the drainage, and the asphalt comes last.
What happens at an estimate
We measure the area, look at how water moves across it and where it sits after rain, probe soft spots and note where the driveway meets the street. Inside Ames, replacing or expanding a driveway needs a city permit and the approach in the right-of-way has to be concrete, so we tell you at the first visit whether your project triggers that and what the city will inspect. Outside city limits, Story County and Boone County have their own entrance permits for drives that meet county roads.
How the quote is written
- Removal of the old surface, listed separately
- Base work: how much stone goes in and where soft ground is dug out
- Compacted asphalt thickness for each area
- Edges, transitions and any concrete approach work
- Sealing or striping, if you want it
Work starts after you approve the written price. If something changes once the old pavement is up, such as a soft area bigger than expected, we show you and put the change in writing before doing it.
